Having a mustache in the density and the shape that they desire is important for some men but sometimes due to genetic, hormonal or other causes, some men can not have the kind of mustache that they desire to have. In this case, mustache transplant can be a permanent solution for having a mustache.

Mustache transplant is an operation that uses the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method for extracting hair follicles from the donor area and implanting them into the area of the mustache. The process utilizes micro-surgery takes 2 to 3 hours to be completed and local anaesthesia is applied on the patient during the whole process, so the operation is painless. We are going to explain you how  mustache transplant is made with more details below.

Which method is used in the mustache transplant operation?

Mustache transplant uses FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method which is performed by extracting the hair follicles from the donor area and keeping them in a special preserving solution to prolong the life cycle of the hair follicles and when the needed amount of hair follicles are gathered, implanting them into the target area of the transplant operation. FUE method is also known to be a method that does not leave marks after the operation.

Which area is used as the donor area in the mustache transplant operation?

Back of the neck is the first choice as the donor area since the hair strands there are the strongest on all the body surface and they are quite hard to lose, but if for any reason the back of the neck is not available for being the donor area, areas such as chest, arm, leg or the unwanted hair on the upper sides of the beard can also be chosen as the donor area.

How long does the mustache transplant operation take?

A mustache transplant usually requires 300 to 500 hair follicles to be transplanted and since the FUE method is used in this operation extracted hair follicles will be cleaned, processed and separated into groups after the extraction process is completed, and then they are placed into the canals which are opened in the mustache area. This whole process is performed when local anaesthesia is applied on the patient and it takes about 2 to 3 hours.

How is the healing process after the mustache transplant?

After the mustache transplant operation, the area of the mustache where the hair follicles were placed will be left open but the donor area (usually the back of the neck) will be left bandaged for 3 days and in these 3 days you should also avoid washing the transplanted area since it is really sensitive and any damage that you can give to the transplanted area may damage the newly placed hair follicles in the area. The whole process of healing after the mustache transplant operation takes around 10 days and it slowly starts from the day you first wash your mustache.
